N2 - The existence of humankind in outer Space started in the twentieth century and today it is in an advanced stage as it has become possible to spend long times outside Earth. Accordingly, permanent habitation outside our home planet has become a subject of discussion in the last years; furthermore, it may become an obligation in the future. In this regard, important features and details about the design of settlement need to be studied to accomplish the design process. Important points in the design of a space settlement are its location, size, form, and components that compose its total body. Besides, there are many challenges and requirements for the design of a space settlement, such as solar radiation, sustainability, and constraints in the construction process due to lack of atmosphere and gravity. Additionally, for the design of space settlement, aesthetic, psychological, and social requirements are as significant as structural and functional ones. Consequently, the process needs a transdisciplinary process of work, involving professionals of various disciplines. The architecture profession has only been recently interested in the design of space settlements. Architectonic studies in the research area need to increase. This article presents a conceptual proposal for the design of a space settlement in Earth orbit from the perspective of architecture, inspired from existing scientific and fictional design ideas.
